IFS: Start Here

Internal Family Systems helps you befriend the parts of yourself you've been fighting. Whether you already speak parts language or you're just noticing patterns for the first time, there's a path forward.

What We Mean by "Parts"

You have protective parts that manage or react (controlling, shutting down, people-pleasing, attacking first) and tender parts they protect. IFS doesn't force change. We grow your capacity to lead from Self—curiosity, clarity, compassion—so protectors can relax and deeper healing can happen.

These parts didn't develop randomly. They're adaptations to a culture that rewards control, performance, and emotional distance—what I call the Dominant Mindset. Understanding this helps you approach your parts with compassion instead of frustration. They were doing their best with what they were given.

Managers

Try to prevent pain by controlling, perfecting, planning, or pleasing.

Firefighters

React fast when pain breaks through—numbing, distracting, or attacking first.

Exiles

Carry burdens from the past—young parts holding fear, shame, or grief.

Choose Your Path

"I'm curious but skeptical."

You don't need to learn a system to start. You just need to notice what's already happening.

When you're stressed, a part takes over—maybe it gets controlling, shuts down, people-pleases, or attacks first. That's not you. That's a strategy that once kept you safe and now runs on autopilot.

Start with One Pattern

  • Notice it: "There's the part that gets defensive when criticized."
  • Ask what it's protecting: "What are you afraid will happen if you don't defend?"
  • Thank it: "I get it. You're trying to keep me safe."

That's it. That's the practice.

"Protectors aren't the enemy. They're overworked teammates who need to know you can handle what they've been carrying."

What You'll Build

Over time, you'll develop the skill of Self-guidance—leading from curiosity, clarity, and compassion instead of from the parts that are scared, angry, or exhausted.

  • Recognize when a part has taken over (instead of "this is just who I am")
  • Stay present long enough to hear what the part needs
  • Set boundaries without armor, connect without losing yourself
  • Build capacity so your system holds more without collapsing

No breakthrough required. Just small, steady steps toward being able to choose instead of react.

"I know the theory. Why am I still stuck?"

You've done the workshops, read the books, maybe even trained in IFS. You can map your system—managers, firefighters, exiles in the basement. But when stress hits, the same old parts still grab the wheel.

The problem isn't that you don't understand. The problem is that understanding lives in your head, and your parts live everywhere else.

You might also be discovering that the patterns you've mapped aren't personal pathology—they're cultural inheritance. The Dominant Mindset shaped all of us. Understanding this changes everything: you're not broken, you're patterned. And patterns can change.

"You don't need more labels. You need a bigger container—one that includes your body, your relationships, and your connection to something larger than just you."

What's Missing: Body, Relationship, Omni

Most IFS work focuses on the Intrapersonal—the inner dialogue between parts and Self. That's essential. But it's not enough.

  • Body capacity: Parts need a regulated nervous system to trust Self. Without somatic grounding, your protectors won't let go—because they know you can't hold what's underneath.
  • Relational practice: Parts get activated in relationship. If you're only doing inner work, you're missing half the picture. Real healing happens in the Interpersonal field.
  • Omnipersonal context: When you're cut off from meaning, ritual, or something larger than your personal story, parts become the whole story. Reconnecting to the Omni dimension gives parts permission to retire.

This is what the Matrix of Self adds to IFS: a map that shows where your parts are stuck and what they need to let Self lead.

Power, Love, and Presence across three dimensions—Intrapersonal, Interpersonal, Omnipersonal. It's the scaffolding that turns insight into embodied practice.

Why Parts Work Succeeds Where Other Methods Don't

Most approaches either push pain away (bypass) or force you into it before you're ready (breakthrough). IFS works differently.

Parts work says: Everything in you has a reason for being there. The anger, the shutdown, the control—they're all protective strategies. When you befriend them instead of battling them, they relax. And when they relax, what's underneath can finally be seen.

This isn't about positive thinking or pushing through. It's about building the capacity to stay present with yourself—even the parts you've been running from.

You're not broken. You're patterned. And patterns can change.

Neurodivergent? If you have ADHD, autism, or process differently, the protective parts you've developed are often survival strategies for navigating a neurotypical world. The masking, the hypervigilance, the exhaustion of performing "normal"—these aren't character flaws. They're adaptations.

I understand this from the inside—and this work is designed to work WITH your wiring, not against it. You don't need to mask here.

Not Sure Which Path You're On?

That's fine. There's a short free course, Within, that you can take on your own time, and there's a free 30-minute call if you'd rather talk it through.

Common Questions

Do I need to know IFS lingo to start?

No. If you can notice "a part of me gets defensive," you're ready. We'll keep the language accessible.

What if I've already done a lot of IFS?

We'll add the pieces that make it stick—body capacity, relational practice, and Omnipersonal context so insight becomes embodied change.

Is this therapy?

I'm an IFS practitioner and guide, not a licensed therapist. This is guided practice. If you need clinical support or crisis care, I'll help you connect with appropriate resources. We complement therapy; we don't replace it.

How do sessions work?

We start where your system is ready. Most sessions include: (1) Check-in and pacing. (2) Befriending protectors. (3) Asking permission to proceed. (4) Witnessing what they protect when ready. (5) Integration—helping parts take on new roles with Self leading.

Will my parts go away?

No. Parts don't disappear—they transform. As they release old burdens, they often take on helpful, updated roles. All parts are welcome.

What does this cost?

Standard rate: $200/hour

Want to Go Deeper?

If you want to understand where these patterns come from—why they're so universal, and why insight alone doesn't change them—I write about this on Unveiling Self, my Substack exploring the Dominant Mindset and the path to genuine freedom.

Ready to Stop Fighting Yourself?

Whether you're adding the missing pieces to your IFS practice or just starting to notice your patterns, the next step is the same: turn toward what's stuck with curiosity instead of control.
